ABOUT THE AREA
The Royal Gorge region is one of Colorado's best-kept secrets. Here's what makes this place special.

THE ROYAL GORGE
The Royal Gorge is a spectacular canyon carved by the Arkansas River over millions of years. At its deepest point, the canyon plunges over 1,000 feet — making it one of the deepest canyons in North America. The famous Royal Gorge Bridge, built in 1929, spans the canyon at 956 feet above the river and was the world's highest suspension bridge for decades. Today, the bridge and park welcome over 400,000 visitors annually.

CANON CITY
Canon City (pronounced CAN-yon City) is a charming Colorado town nestled at the mouth of the Royal Gorge. With over 300 days of sunshine, mild winters, and stunning scenery, it's the perfect base for outdoor adventures. The vibrant downtown features local shops, restaurants, galleries, and the historic Main Street district. Young families, remote workers, and retirees are discovering that Canon City offers mountain-town quality of life at a fraction of Front Range prices.

THE ARKANSAS RIVER
The Arkansas River is one of the premier whitewater rivers in the United States. Originating near Leadville, it flows through the heart of Colorado, carving dramatic canyons and creating world-class rapids. The section through the Royal Gorge is legendary among rafters, while the Bighorn Sheep Canyon upstream offers gentler rapids perfect for families. Gold Medal fishing waters, kayaking, and riverside camping make the Arkansas a year-round destination.
